Dedicated to her father, who passed in January, 2018; Proud is a poignant and heartfelt promise by Emma G to fulfill her musical dreams as a fulltime singer/songwriter, and make him proud.
“I grew up with my mother in New Zealand, who did an incredible job raising me by herself in New Zealand, while my father lived in his home country of Fiji for my entire childhood. I was only able to visit him maybe once a year at the most, when I was growing up”, Emma G explains. “This made it really difficult to connect with him, and with how different our cultures were: I never really knew if he approved of my ambitions, or of my life as a musician. He seemed to want me to stick to a ‘safe’ job… which I was terrible at. I always wondered if he resented that.”
Emma G moved from New Zealand to Washington DC in November, 2015 and started her life as a musician in the nations capitol by busking (street performing) for people on their way to work every morning between 6.30am and 10am. It might not be the “safest” way to earn a living, but it has definitely offered Emma G some memorable career highlights, including performing at the Kennedy Center, the National Cherry Blossom Parade, and being featured on Fox5, PBS and Canad’s CBC.
When Emma G learned of her father’s passing: she flew to Fiji to be with her family, unsure of how her American life would blend with the traditional Fijian celebration of life. Arriving to her family home, however, she quickly learned that her father would often boast about her musical achievements in the United States. “It was such a weird feeling as I mourned his death, while trying to be there for my family, not really knowing much who he was, yet feeling relief that he approved and celebrated my achievements”.
Not long after Emma G returned to her Washington DC home, she “vomited feelings on to a page”, and minutes later ended up with the hauntingly beautiful track: Proud.
“So I lie awake and I tell myself / That I will try to make it, make you proud” she laments.
